Blackface shows were marketed as a peculiar mix of high- and lowbrow entertainment they were bawdy and crude, planting, in this way, the seed of vaudeville, but they also attempted to translate more elitist forms of art, such as opera, to a popular stage. They often featured singing, dancing, skits and instrumental music, the latter often some form of “Negro melodies”. The performances began in a number of north-eastern states. In the 1830s, however, blackface took off in its most recognizable form today, when it was integrated into onstage performances by white Americans who donned dark makeup, red lips and rough curly wigs, the blackness of their makeup amplifying the whiteness of their eyes and teeth. These images sought to portray black people as clowns and freakish beings, exaggerating features so as to suggest the “otherness” of black bodies. As an image, the iconography of blackface dates back centuries, appearing in colonial-era illustrations of black Africans. The entertainer in blackface – even when it was a black American forced to put on blackface makeup – “is white”, Ellison noted.Īt the height of its popularity in the late 19th century, seeing white performers adorned in coal-black makeup, woolly wigs and outlandishly red lips was one of the most beloved pastimes for white American families. It was an act of both offense and defense: an attack through derision, and a kind of psychological defense against a deeply feared group. We’ll be more than happy to add it to our list. When white Americans dumped tea into the Boston Harbor, Ellison argues, they were wearing the costumes – the masks – of Native Americans when white Americans wished to ease their discomfort with black Americans, they simply adopted blackness itself as a costume, a clown suit, attempting to at once crudely mimic African Americans through stereotypes and to create a caricature that could be easily laughed at and spoken down to. It is going to be hard to get reliable metrics out of that year. I think in this case, as homebrewers, it is kind of our own thing to save ya?Ĭlick to expand.Pittsburgh was my first NHC. I’ve also never attended GABF, and I can’t go this year so maybe the timing will work out.IDK. Im going to try and attend next year’s event because I liked this year’s enough to go again. E.g., they could have tried to host at the Grand Manchester Hyatt which is on the water next to the SD convention center, or at some random Motel 6, or somewhere in between like an…Embassy Suites maybe? What is actually important To You? The education, the vendors, the experience, all of the above? Take into account the nature of the economy, inflation, cost considerations, etc. If you decided to not attend, let them know why. It doesn’t seem like they’re not receptive to hearing criticism. If you attended and didn’t like the event, let them know. etc.Ī couple of things I take away from this thread. We need this to succeed, how can we do better, what are we missing, etc. IMO, but I felt like there was a certain level of frenetic’ness at the event, which fed into the high level of energy that I saw at the event. They want to make sure that all the talks are relevant, well received and of value. I heard multiple accounts about the vendor area being tiny and not much energy at the event.Ģ - AHA wants feedback. I will say that I took 2 things away as they seemed to be recurring themes.ġ - Pittsburgh was a flop. Was this due to proximity of the location in general, an increase in interest in homebrewing, a WTH it’s in San Diego so why not?, I have no idea. There were quite a few first time attendees, at least by a show of hands in the first talk I was in. Have I seen worse, or been subjected to worse as an attendee? Absolutely. Were there things that could have been done better? Absolutely. I’ve read what a lot of you have stated in this thread, and I have no basis of comparison. This was my first Homebrew Con, and having said that I enjoyed the experience. If I go next year to Denver, it will probably be my last one. What about the competition? With it in October, does that mean the regionals switch to July/August and we ship in summer heat? Or will they stay in March/April? Or will regionals be eliminated again? I could not go to Homebrew Con this year because already spent a lot on upcoming trip to Germany for Oktoberfest. Homebrew Con, at least we are learning in sessions while we drink! I am curious on the logistics of this too.will they use a second location to hold the classes since most of the convention center is set up for GABF? Will it be one combined ticket for sessions in the day and GABF at night? If so how expensive is that going to be? Will they eliminate club night and pro night? I don't care that it's more than a year away, the AHA should be telling us what the plan is now. I understand the cost saving benefits, but to me, my one experience with GABF, is that everyone is just trying to drink as much beer as possible as fast as they can. I have been to GABF and it draws a TON of people so the logistics of adding another event seems like it will make it a nightmare to manuever (finding accomodation, flights, getting in and out of the event etc.) This will be my last Con, unless there are major changes. I was disappointed to hear about Con combining with GABF, but at least they are continuining it in some fashion, for those still interested in attending. There were way less vendors, way less swag and the setup for club night and the kickoff party were poorly constructed as everyone was crammed into far too small a space. I loved being in San Diego but found that Con overall was disappointing compared to last year. Meanwhile, vendors apparently pay an exorbitant fee (and provide the freebie swag themselves), entries for NHC have skyrocketed to $29 a pop, tickets to the events are hundreds of dollars each.we even have to pay $30 for a tee shirt if we want one! The judges for NHC are volunteer, volunteers man the events, the speakers are volunteer, the beers at knockout are the B/C bottles from NHC etc. It seems to me, the venue and advertising are really the only major costs I could see for the AHA (they gave us breakfast a couple days and a taco buffet at club night this year fwiw). I was at this year's Con (and last year) and I spoke with some of the vendors who indicated it was VERY expensive for them to be a vendor. It won them a place in the culebra world. The Geckos joined her cause, and they settled an old score. They ran headlong into a bar full of bloodsuckers and bandits, facing off with the vampire goddess Santánico. The year 999 is where our protagonist and new companion begin their story together, at the dawn of the 50th anniversary of the victory. You see, in the year 950, Demons and Humans were at war with each other and history took a turn as the humans overcome the creatures and won the war. After a brief rescue, you both investigate a nearby magical stone and find yourself whisked back in time by fifty years! As you explore your surroundings, you come across the girl as she is under attack by some punk-demons. The story of Evoland 2 is much more structured and apparent – you’re an unknown protagonist who is taken in by a young girl and her father when they come across you one day (think The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening). However, what I ended up with was around 15 hours of a much deeper and well thought out RPG game which appears to have its story and mechanics first and the visual gimmicks second! To say I was shocked and highly impressed would be a massive understatement. I’d not played this one before so I was expecting another three to five-hour adventure based on various visual effects hidden in chests. Great dialogue exchanged between me and the NPCs…Īfter playing the first game and completing it in one sitting in around three hours, I wasn’t expecting much from Evoland 2. Also, as the game has been out for many years on PC, there are a number of guides out there should you need a helping hand in finding some of the more obscure and hidden items. There’s a card game, which is a lot like the one in Final Fantasy VIII, with a bunch of cards to find throughout the world, as well as stars to collect, money to save, enemies to slay, and other random tasks which are all non-missable from what I can see. You switch between them because the various visual styles all have different perspectives on the environment – a stone which blocks you in SNES mode may actually only be a small slab which you can easily walk over in 3D mode, for example.įor the trophy hunters out there, Evoland 1 is rather simple. Some of these puzzles are really intuitive as you must swap between PS1-style 3D graphics and flat SNES-like visuals. It’s a nice straight forward quest which doesn’t require much thinking even though you will have a few puzzles to solve along the way. You’re a guy who meets a girl and you end up on a mini-adventure together as you chase after the guy who attacked her village. There is a story buried within this first game but it doesn’t really stick out. However, purchase a DVD drive and the loading times will vanish – pure genius! That’s right, upon unlocking the pre-rendered backdrops, the game adds in loading times between screens, something we all had to put up with back in the day. You’ll find things like 16/256 colours, a 3D map, random encounters, music, a backstory, NPCs, and even pre-rendered backgrounds like we saw in games such as Final Fantasy VII. Each time you find a new chest in the world, you’ll unlock a new mechanic or art style. That’s where this game thrives and stands out from the crowd of ‘retro-like’ games, it doesn’t try to be old-school, it literally IS old-school as it recreates the original styles. It’s like ‘the history of RPG games’ in one package! Upon obtaining a chest, you can now move left, then up and down soon you’ll be moving from screen to screen with per-screen transitions followed by smooth scrolling. You begin the game as a blocky GameBoy sprite who can only move right. I’ve played this game before and replaying it on the PS4 brought back a lot of fond memories. I’m not saying the game is bad, it’s just rather short, clocking in at around three hours, and it seems to shove visual and mechanical gimmicks into the gameplay more than a solid story. The transition from one style to the next is cool.Īs I stated above, the original Evoland feels like a proof of concept which was put together with the game created as an afterthought. There was some consideration given to the possibility idea of a new lighthouse offshore on Southwest Ledge, a more advantageous location, but building a lighthouse on the rocky ledge was then prohibitively expensive. The light was also deemed too low and dim to be much of a help to navigation. He also reported the keeper’s house to be “in a very bad state of repair.” Bache described the tower as “very much decayed” and leaky, and said that none of the lights were in the proper position. – Gentlemen who have passed their grand climactic, may here have their mental faculties perfectly restored in three days. taken directly from their natural element, and served up at a short notice, with the best trimmings -– Liquors of the first chop -– Pasture or stabling for horses. are invited to the LIGHT-HOUSE, at the south point of New-Haven harbor, where arrangements are made for their accommodation. Gentlemen and Ladies, who, during the summer months, wish to enjoy a delightful sea breeze, an extensive prospect, shady bowers, &c. It isn’t known how long Keeper Finch engaged in this practice, which was generally frowned on by the authorities.Īn ad in the June 28, 1810, edition of the American Mercury read:Ī SUMMER RETREAT. One of the early keepers, Connecticut native Jonathan Finch, spent 16 years (from 1805 to 1821) at Five Mile Point, apparently augmenting his meager keeper’s salary by taking in guests. Morris remained keeper for only three weeks. The first keeper was Amos Morris Jr., who sold the land for the lighthouse to the government. It was commonly called Five Mile Point Light after its distance from downtown New Haven. Built in 1805 on the east side of the harbor entrance, the first New Haven Light was an octagonal 30-foot wooden tower.
